What should I check before buying replacement tyres?
Start with the tyre size, load index and speed rating specified on your vehicle placard or in the owner's manual. Then compare the tyre category, current condition, intended driving use and whether you need standard, run-flat, EV-rated or light-truck tyres.
What does a tyre size such as 205/55R16 mean?
205 is the tyre width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R means radial construction, and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches. Any following number and letter identify the load index and speed rating.
When must passenger tyres be replaced in Victoria?
Transport Victoria requires at least 1.5 mm of tread in the principal grooves, except at the tread-wear indicators. Tyres should also be inspected or replaced when there are cuts, bulges, exposed cords, casing damage or other safety concerns.
Should I replace run-flat tyres with standard tyres?
Use the tyre type and specification recommended for your vehicle. Changing from run-flat to standard tyres may affect the spare-wheel or repair-kit requirements and should be checked against the vehicle manufacturer's guidance before purchase.
