Tyre Pressure Guide: How to Check & Set Correct PSI

Learn how to find your correct tyre pressure, check it properly when cold, and why correct PSI improves safety, fuel economy and tyre life.

Find your recommended pressure

Your recommended tyre pressure is on the placard inside the driver's door jamb, and in your owner's manual. It is usually given in PSI or kPa for front and rear tyres.

Note that this figure is the vehicle's recommended pressure — not the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall, which you should not use as your everyday setting.

Check pressure when cold

Always check pressure when the tyres are cold — before driving, or after the car has been parked for a few hours. Driving heats the air inside and gives a falsely high reading.

Check at least once a month and before long trips. Don't forget the spare.

Why correct pressure matters

Under-inflated tyres wear faster on the edges, increase fuel use, and can overheat — a major cause of blowouts. Over-inflated tyres wear in the centre and reduce grip and comfort.

Carrying heavy loads or towing? Your placard usually lists a higher recommended pressure for loaded driving.
